‘it would seem that our lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. we are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. we are far too easily pleased.’

God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain :: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.

we often say that we can’t hear from God. we wish he spoke more clearly. was more present. sometimes our prayers feel like they’re launched towards a Divine silence.

we hardly even expect that we’ll hear a response.

could it be that one reason we don’t hear God’s voice is that we try so hard to avoid pain at any cost? could it be that God is trying to speak to us, yet we fill our lives with distractions that drown out his soft whispers, ignore our consciences and run from the very pain he is seeking to speak to us in?

in the midst of my own pain, i find myself clinging to what is most important. when i feel anguish, more often than not i am drawn to a place of desperation and find myself seeking God in a way that (though i hate to admit it) puts to shame the apathy with which i seek him in my comfort.

could it be that in pleasure, conscience and pain what God desires is to awaken and arouse what is my deepest desire and most passionate longing – for him?

it’s worth considering.

and perhaps worth embracing pain when it’s present instead of running the other way.
